bmw m1

perhaps the most interesting car at this year’s Melbourne motorshow is BMW’s M1 supercar The German powerhouse has the largest stand here in Melbourne and to showcase their lineup, the orange M1 concept sits beautifully in the middle.

The new M1 pays tribute to the original back some 30 years ago. Back then the original BMW M1 had a mid-mounted 6-cylinder engine that just made over 200kW of power. How times change.he new M1 not only looks a million times better but it’s also powered by an upgraded version of BMW’s familiar 5.0-litre V10, putting out an enorous 378kW of power. The M1 is purely a design concept to show-off the expertise of BMW’s design team, however if it ever does go into produciton it will compete against the Audi R8, Porsche 911 Carrera, Ferrari F430 and perhaps even Aston Martin’s V8 Vantage. The M1 is by far one of the most interesting cars at this year’s show.

lotus evora

The Lotus Evora was created to attract new and taller customers to the Lotus brand. Lotus say that the Evora can easily accommodate two 6ft 5in tall American males in the front seats. So far, the 2+2 sports coupe has been ordered by James Bond 007 actors Daniel Craig and Pierce Brosnan, Jay Leno, BeyoncĂ©, George Clooney, Kevin Spacey, and J-Lo. There is no doubt that the Evora has a special place in celebrities’ hearts.

Well, the Lotus Evora is getting even more special. According to AutoCar, Lotus is working on a supercharged version of the Lotus that will increase horsepower from 275-hp to a whopping 350-hp. The sprint from 0 to 60 mph will come in just 5 seconds with a top speed of 175-mph.

We’re guessing that two people who ordered the 275-hp Evora are probably kicking themselves in the arse right now. That would be Top Gear hosts Richard Hammond and James May.

According to sources the supercharged Lotus Evora won’t arrive until 2011.The new Lotus Evora is everything a sports car should be; sculptural, stylish and fast; considerably faster than the famous Elise and more refined at speed than the track-focused Exige. Lotus promises its trademark exemplar performance credentials and suggests the Evora will achieve a maximum speed of 160 mph and a 0-60 time at less than 5 seconds!

High-end cars have long been integral to the one-upmanship among the glitterati, but rather than the traditional Bentleys and Bugattis, the A-lister must-have vehicles of the moment are small, environmentally friendly (225 grams of CO2 per kilometre) cars and must include seats for the children. But above all, an it-car must be exclusive, and nothing conveys extreme exclusivity better than the British, hand-built Lotus of which less than 2000 will be made a year for international distribution.

The versatility of the Evora has attracted a varied following, from speed seekers such as Jodie Kidd and Maxi Jazz, to those with an eye for style including Jennifer Lopez and Kelly Rowland.

Celebrity enthusiasts Patrick Dempsey and Jay Leno also made sure they too were first on the list for a test drive, followed closely by J-Lo and her husband Marc Anthony who are already huge Lotus fans and owners of a Lotus Elise. The celebrity couple enjoy the unrivalled driving experience of a Lotus, but are looking for more space for the children. The same goes for Gavin Henson and Charlotte Church, who are keen to have a car that accommodates their young family yet maintains a luxurious, yet sporty persona.

Mike Kimberley, CEO of Group Lotus plc, had this to say about the new model: "The Evora is the biggest milestone for Lotus since the Elise was born 13 years ago. We are currently working at broadening the appeal of the Lotus brand through an aggressive 5-year model plan of which this car represents the first exciting step."

Keeping with the Lotus tradition, the price tag is not out of reach for those who cannot be found on the internets 'movie database'. The Lotus Evora enters the sports car market at less than £50,000 making this car a real value proposition for those who like to work and play hard! This hand-built phenomenon will be available in early 2009.

The Lotus EVORA is the first of three new cars to be included in the new five year business plan. Celebrity fans waiting to drive the car include:

• Amanda Stretton – Driver and new face of F1
• Beyonce – International singer and actress (Destiny's Child)
• Boris Johnson – Mayor of London
• Daniel Craig – Actor
• Dave Grohl – Musician (Foo Fighters)
• Gavin Henson & Charlotte Church Welsh Rugby International/Singer, child prodigy, TV personality
• Gemma Arterton - Actress
• George Clooney - Actor
• James Martin – Celebrity chef, Daily Mail's Motoring reporter
• James May – TV personality and presenter of 'Top Gear'
• Jay Kay – Musician and Singer (Jamiroquai)
• Jay Leno – TV personality and car enthusiast
• Jodie Kidd – Model,,TV personality and car enthusiast
• Jenifer Lopez and Marc Anthony – International singer and actress/International singer
• Kevin Spacey - Actor
• Mark Ronson – Musician and producer
• Maxi Jazz – Musician and car enthusiast (Faithless)
• Patrick Dempsey – Actor and car enthusiast
• Peter Andre - Singer
• Pierce Brosnan - Actor
• Richard Hammond - TV personality and presenter of 'Top Gear

ferrari 288 GTO

Of the many great Ferraris built, the 250 GTO is what many think is the greatest. Exactly 22 years after the first GTO was launched in 1962, Ferrari announced a new model with the legendary GTO badge, the 288 GTO.

The engine was good for 400bhp. Top speed is 190 mph (305 kph). Lightweight materials were used throughout the car. The entire body was made of kevlar, fiberglass and aluminum. But because of safety reasons, the doors were made of steel. The 288’s weight was low at 2550 lbs (1156 kg). 60mph (100 kph) comes in 5 seconds.

Ferrari built the 288 for one reason only; to homologate it for racing. The “O” in GTO is taken from the Italian word “Omologato”, homologation in English. Gran Touring racing was the idea for the 250, Ferrari had other plans for the 288. The very popular Group B rally class would be where the 288 would race. This meant Ferrari had to build a minimum of 200 road going GTOs to get it homologated. Production started right after its 1984 Geneva launch. A total of 273 GTOs were built.

An Evoluzione version with very revised bodywork was first shown in 1986. This was going to be Ferrari’s entrant for the Group B events. Under the aerodynamic body was a 600+ hp version of the turbocharged V8. Five cars were built but none of them were ever entered in a rally. After a number of terrible accidents, Group B was cancelled for 1987 effectively cutting the lives of many great racing cars short, including the 288 GTO’s.

Today the 288 GTO remains as one of the most sought after ’modern’ Ferraris. With only 273 288 GTOs produced, it has the smallest production figure of any road going Ferrari built in the last 30 years.

krl

ford Focus RS

Ford has finally released the long overdue press statement on the Focus RS, and to make up for the delay it’s 9,000 words long! However, we just picked out the interesting figures for you and put together a gallery of all the new pictures.

As we had already reported (but is now confirmed…) the Focus RS will start from £24,995 (around $35,000 US), and it will have a 300 hp engine that will shoot the fast Ford from 0-62 in 5.9 seconds and go on to an unlimited top speed of 163mph.

300hp seems like a lot to be going through a FWD car, and the reason that Ford did not opt for AWD is brought up by team RS Chief Engineer, Dirk Densing:

“Front-wheel-drive was our preference all along. All-wheel-drive systems add cost, weight, inertia and consequently, fuel consumption. Compensating for the significant weight of an all-wheel-drive system requires dynamic compromises we preferred not to make. If you can achieve the performance you want without steering disturbance, then front-wheel-drive is a better performance car – lighter and with a more precise, linear steering response than AWD. With the work of our advanced research team in Aachen, we were able to achieve this and deliver something genuinely different,”

Well, as long as they have achived this without, as Dirk puts, it ‘steering disturbance’ (silly amounts of torque steer…) then fair play to Team RS, but we shall let you know when we get our hands behind the wheel on the launch.

A new specially developed ESP system keeps you on track and has be designed to work with the driver. Although it can be turned off Ford boffins reckon that it goes round the Nburg ring just as fast with it on.

The Focus RS has also been tested at Fords Lommel Proving Ground in Belgium and has beaten the previous lap record set by the Ford GT, so it turns out this could just be the fastest Ford ever.

new mitsubishi lancer evo 10 FQ-400

It was only a matter of time before Mitsubishi's British engineers tired of relentlessly beating the FQ300 and FQ360 versions of their homegrown Evos. So it's no surprise that after a 400-hp version of the Evo X successfully campaigned in the Britcar Championship, Mitsubishi finally gave the go-ahead to its crack team of in-house tweakers to produce a road going version for public consumption. The FQ400 is on its way. If the Mitsu team holds true to the original ADR Motorsport-developed Evo, expect a new turbocharger, exhaust manifold and fuel system, along with a reworked ECU to make use of the extra boost and petrol. Naturally, output will be related to the FQ400's name, with 400hp being delivered to all four wheels through a manual gearbox. A top speed of 170 mph and a 0-60 time of around 3.5 seconds shouldn't be too hard to achieve, and with a reworked suspension, upgraded brakes and some aerodynamic enhancements, Lambo owners should think twice before cutting the FQ400 off at their first track day at Silverstone. Pricing hasn't been released yet, but expect the Mitsubishi Evolution X FQ400 to crest the £45,000 mark when it goes on sale next year in the UK.

USB watch

Geek watches. I L-O-V-E geek watches. I have watches that take pictures, record voice memos, make calculations, store phone numbers and tell me which way is North. Although I enjoy each one in its own way, they all have one very obvious thing in common: they LOOK like geek watches. Few tools are more effective at creating a “dinner for one” scenario than a calculator on your wrist. Heck, I’ll torture myself by doing the calculation on my phone’s tiny dialpad before I head to a party with that sucker. So you can imagine how impressed I was when I received the new Memory watch from Edge Memory.

We get plenty of gadget shipments around here so it took me a minute to realize what I was looking at: A 64 MB USB 1.1 drive encased in a wrist watch. Cleverly lodged inside the strap is the USB cable that connects the watch drive to any computer with a USB port. Right out of the box this looks like a really nice watch. Not chunky, thick or button covered.

I am a huge fan of portable USB key storage devices. Requiring no power of their own, I’ve had a small 32 MB USB drive stored in my wallet for years. Unfortunately, it was also one of the first of its kind and required you to install drivers in any PC you wanted to use it in. The new variety are plug and play on any PC running Windows 2000, ME, Windows NT and XP. The Memory Watch is no exception and even comes with software allowing you to secure your data.

Like all self respecting gadget nuts, I left the instructions and software back in the box and just plugged it into my laptop (Win XP Pro). Sure enough, I had a new drive show up seconds later. I was doing the drag and drop two step with utter abandon at 4.2MB per second. Once the transfer completed, I disconnected it, tucked the USB cord back into the strap and headed out for the day. As usual, I brought the device down to all my favorite electronics shops. The staff were pretty juiced at how low key they had managed to keep the storage function. It may say 64MB and USB on the watch but most folks would never notice it.

Below is a photo comparing the size of the Memory Watch with my normal Guess watch and my uber geek Casio Wrist Camera.

Overall I was very impressed with this product. My only gripes are minor. There is no backlight lighting on the display and apparently no fluorescent paint on the needles so it’s virtually impossible to tell the time in the middle of the night. It also has no alarm functions, however I rarely every use that feature on my other watches. Other than that, the unit’s a killer. I plan on handing them out as holiday gifts to both geeks and non-geeks alike. You can pick up a 128MB version for yourself for $89.00, what a steal!

new merccdez slr mclaren stirling

The Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR Stirling Moss Silver Arrow, as it's called, lives up to its name from every angle, especially the long, sloped hood with its headlights pushed all the way to the very edges of the body. The car might be able to outrun an arrow, too: it's got a top speed of 217 mph, and a 0-60 time under 3.5 seconds from a 5.5-liter, 650-hp, V8 supercharged engine. That top speed can only be reached, though, if the tonneau cover is placed over the passenger seat for maximum aerodynamic flow over the cockpit.

Those large, black grates on the sides of the 2009 Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR Stirling Moss roadster aren't just for show (nothing on this car is without a purpose). The black ventilation grilles mask two exhaust tailpipes on either side and match the ventilation grilles on the hood. What, you may ask, am I supposed to do if I'm screaming down the autobahn and a rain shower takes me by surprise? There is a simple fabric soft-top that can be used to protect the interior if you can't get the tonneau covers properly installed in time.

At an event ahead of tomorrow's Detroit Auto Show kick-off, Mercedes-Benz showed off the new Mclaren SLR Stirling Moss to a select group of journos. The company is only offering 75 roadsters to current SLR owners to close out the supercar's tenure, so when these windscreen-free, 650 hp monsters are gone, that's it for the SLR. It must be a rush exploring the SLR's supercharged 5.5-liter V8 and 217 mph top speed with your head out in the open. Goofy old man and silly aviator eye-protectors sold seperately.

Remember the Mclaren SLR Stirling Moss? Here are the live shots of it, powered by an SLR722-supplied 650-hp supercharged 5.5-liter V8 mated with a five-speed auto, reaching 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and achieving the top speed of 217 mph. It will arrived to Detroit Auto Show 2009. Read the rest for more pictures.

FAB Design brings us their new model the “Desire,” however most of you probably wouldn’t desire this particular look for your Mercedes SLR McLaren. Although the numbers are impressive, it looks like FAB Design has too much time on their hands and went over the top with this look. The body has been redesigned by the Swiss company to include sturdy and light weight carbon that is produced in an autoclave. Exclusive FAB Design side skirts allow the high performance exhaust system to come out of the sides. In the rear they installed a large diffuser to reduce lift force, and gave buyers the option of the rear wing to increase down force without limiting the cars performance.

New inside for the SLR McLaren (and most Mercedes models) is an advanced new multimedia head unit which includes a more colorful display, in-dash 6-disc CD and/or DVD changer and Bluetooth® hands-free connectivity. Numerous new optional features/packages include an iPod®/MP3 Media Interface, a hard-disk drive for the navigation system and storage for four gigabytes of music, harman/kardon LOGIC7® surround sound system with Dolby® digital and DTS® 5.1 surround sound capabilities, Zagat Restaurant Survey® and advanced voice-control for audio, navigation and phone systems.

new porsche carrera gt 2

Through its design language alone, the Carrera GT expresses its truly outstanding performance as an uncompromising, no-nonsense supersports. But contrary to prototypes conceived only for racing, the design of the Carrera GT, despite the re-interpretation of existing features and the use of design elements never seen before, shows a convincing resemblance in design to Porsche’s production cars, even providing a certain reminiscence of Porsche’s legendary racing cars. The typical Porsche face with the front lid swept back like an arrow and the elevated wheel arches, for example, take up the design of Porsche’s legendary sports cars.

Lightweight Technology Throughout
Porsche’s philosophy to concentrate on the essential comes out particularly in the Carrera GT through the use of consistent lightweight technology in every respect. Measuring 4.61 metres or 181.5" in length, 1.92 metres or 75.6" in width, 1.16 metres or 45.7" in height, and with wheelbase of 2.73 metres or 107.5", the Carrera GT weighs in at an ideal unladen weight of 3043 lb.

Magnificent Power and Muscle
The ten-cylinder power unit behind the cockpit of the Carrera GT is based on a 5.5-litre normal aspiration engine which, as a thoroughbred racing machine, might also have been raced in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Increasing engine capacity for the Carrera GT to 5.7 litres, Porsche’s engineers have now achieved maximum output of 612 bhp at 8000 rpm and maximum torque of 435 lb-ft at 5750 rpm. Top speed is 205 mph. And despite its racing character, this ten-cylinder is fully suited for everyday motoring also at low engine speeds.

The Ceramic Clutch – Another World-First Achievement
Apart from Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) already well known and widely lauded for their efficiency, Porsche is now using extra-light and extremely resistant ceramics for the transmission of power in this top-flight athlete: The Carrera GT is the first car in the world equipped with a ceramic clutch, the Porsche Ceramic Composite Clutch (PCCC), to use its precise name.

Through its compact dimensions, this two-plate dry clutch meets all the requirements of motorsport: Clutch plate diameter is only 169 millimetres or 6.65", serving to give the engine and transmission a very low centre of gravity. A further feature of the new ceramic discs is their much longer service life compared with alternative materials.

Chassis and Module Frame Forming a Closely-Knit Team
The Carrera GT is the first production car in the world with a monocoque chassis and module frame made of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFP), a principle Porsche has registered for a patent in the meantime. Carbon, a material carried over from the most sophisticated aerospace applications, is elaborately processed and finished on the car in providing the foundation for supreme performance and driving dynamics combined with minimum weight and maximum strength.

So here again, Porsche’s engineers have transferred the great demands made on the race track to a road-going sports car for regular use, giving the Carrera GT not only outstanding performance, but also supreme safety all in one.

Same Underfloor as a Racing Car
With a top speed of or 205 mph, aerodynamics are obviously a crucial factor. So to maximise the downforces acting on the Carrera GT, the car features underfloor geometry of the same kind otherwise to be found only on racing cars: Interacting with the rear diffuser and airflow channels, the fully covered carbon underfloor generates a suction effect quite unusual on a road-going vehicle of any kind.

Sensitive Suspension Set-Up
Advancing into an ultra-high speed range, the Carrera GT obviously requires a spectacular spring and damper set-up to maintain the stability of the car – also at the rear – at all speeds. And again, the solution applied for this purpose comes straight from motorsport, spring/damper elements operated by stainless-steel pushrods and pivot levers being fitted inside the chassis structure. This firm connection to the chassis promotes exact response of the springs and dampers, ensuring safe and secure driving behaviour in the process.

Seats only Half Their Usual Weight
Within the sophisticated interior of the Carrera GT combining smooth and subtle leather, magnesium and carbon-fibre structures, the all-new seats catch your eye immediately, also through their elegant, sporting design. These are the first production seats ever made of composite carbon and aramide fibres, aramide being better known, of course, as kevlar. The result is a substantial decrease in weight, the bucket seats in the Carrera GT, at 22.7 lb, weighing only about half as much as conventional seats.

Supersports for the Road
The Carrera GT is the open two-seater in the classic open supersports segment. But that does not mean that bad weather will keep the Carrera GT in the garage, since the car comes with a specially developed, easy-to-use roof system made of two individual lightweight carbon shells each weighing 5.3 lb and removable by means of rapid-action catches for subsequent storage in the front luggage compartment.

The design of the car is determined throughout by aerodynamic requirements. The main criterion in designing the body of the car was the consideration of genuine racing conditions on the track requiring high downforces. At its top speed of 205 mph, the Carrera GT develops a downforce of approximately 4000 Newton, equal to a load pressing on the rear axle of 400 kilos. Elaborate geometry on the underfloor also serves to maximise downforces, without at the same time exerting a negative influence on the car’s drag coefficient. With its rear diffuser and airflow channels, the fully covered underfloor made of composite carbon-fibre generates a suction effect quite unusual on a road car.

Thoroughbred Ten-Cylinder Racing Engine
The ten-cylinder power unit with dry sump lubrication behind the cockpit of the Carrera GT is based on a 5.5-litre V10 normal-aspiration engine which might well have been raced in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, given its qualities as a genuine racing machine. Engine capacity has been increased to 5.7 litres for the production car, enabling the power unit of the Carrera GT, with its tremendous performance, to meet all requirements for circuit racing and at the same time providing all the qualities required in everyday motoring.

Indeed, the Carrera GT clearly proves its status as a supersports for the road through its performance data alone: Maximum output is 612 hp at 8000 rpm, maximum torque 435 lb-ft at 5750 rpm. Top speed, in turn, is 205 mph, the Carrera GT entering new dimensions through its acceleration from 0 – 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, and 0 – 124 mph in a staggering 9.9 seconds.

Innovative Six-Speed Manual Gearbox
A six-speed manual gearbox developed especially for the Carrera GT and fitted transversely at the rear of the car conveys the enormous power of the engine smoothly and consistently to the road. Compact in design and with the lowest possible centre of gravity, the gearbox contributes to the car’s optimum weight distribution.

Due to the need to use a clutch as compact as possible for racing requirements, the Carrera GT does not come with a two-mass flywheel – but the function of such a flywheel is provided nevertheless by the special design of the input shafts: The first main shaft is hollow, with a long and thin full shaft running inside as a spring rod. Together with the mass weight of the angle drive the two shafts acting as a torsion spring serve to absorb possible jolts coming from the engine, reducing transmission noise in the process.

Another World-First Achievement: the Ceramic Clutch
The Carrera GT is the first car in the world to feature a ceramic clutch, to be precise the Porsche Ceramic Composite Clutch (PCCC). A particular feature of this worldwide innovation is the small clutch plate measuring just 169 millimetres or 6.56" in diameter and giving the entire drive unit a very low centre of gravity. Another decisive advantage is the low mass weight of the clutch with its positive effect on the engine’s dynamic qualities.

Previously only a carbon-fibre clutch was able to offer these qualities required in motorsport. But having a much shorter service life, such a clutch would not have met the demands made of the Carrera GT in terms of everyday driving dependability. The Porsche Ceramic Composite Clutch (PCCC) exceeding even the service life of conventional clutch plates is an all-new construction in every respect.

Developing this new technology, Porsche’s engineers have benefited from their excellent experience with Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), at the same time continuing the development of this material, making it suitable for a two-plate dry clutch with a long running life.

The Suspension – Dynamic and Comfortable All in One
The chassis and suspension of the Carrera GT has already proven its qualities under the toughest conditions, being carried over from the Porsche 911 GT1, the winner of the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans. Experience gained in this and other races regarding the particular requirements made of a composite carbon-fibre chassis has gone into the Carrera GT in all details and with all its features. The fine response and optimum transmission of forces to the chassis of the Carrera GT are ensured by the double-wishbone pushrod axles front and rear. Contrary to the McPherson spring struts commonly used on other Porsche sports cars, pushrods have separate guide sleeves and springs, pursuing a design principle providing sensitive response and perfect spring balance at both low and high speeds. The high standard of driving dynamics, finally, is also supported by the agile power steering.

Ceramic Brakes for Supreme Stopping Power
The Carrera GT comes with ceramic brake discs introduced in production cars by Porsche as the first manufacturer in 2001, when this world-first achievement made its appearance in the 911 GT2. Now Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) have been further optimised and enlarged for the Carrera GT, diameter of the cross-drilled composite ceramic brake discs with their efficient involute cooling ducts measuring 380 millimetres or 14.96" front and rear. Measuring 34 millimetres or 1.34" in thickness, the ceramic discs featured in the PCCB brake system are about 50 per cent lighter than grey-cast-iron discs of the same type and size. In conjunction with the brake lining also developed as a all-new technology, PCCB brakes immediately build up a very high and, in particular, consistent frictional coefficient.

Electronic Assistance When Driving to the Limit
When running on different road surfaces and under adverse weather conditions, ABS and the traction control system allow a dynamic style of driving even when the driver goes to the very limit. This system enhances driving stability when braking and accelerating and gives the driver of the Carrera GT an appropriate feeling of safety in line with the car’s outstanding performance.

The four-channel anti-lock brake system allows individual control of the wheels on the front and rear axles, with the entire set-up of ABS being adapted to the ceramic brakes for very short stopping distances keeping the driver under control with full response of the steering. Integrated four-channel anti-spin control (ASC) is activated whenever required throughout the car’s entire acceleration process, preventing excessive wheel spin on the drive wheels and keeping the rear end of the car smooth and stable on the road.

Yet another feature serving to slow down the drive wheels of the car when spinning is the automatic brake differential (ABD). Whenever he wishes, however, the driver can do without this electronic support by switching off the entire traction control function by a button in the cockpit.

Trendsetting Body Concept in Monocoque Design
The Carrera GT is the first car in the world, whether on the road or in racing, to apply a brand-¬new design and construction concept, both the monocoque and the entire frame carrying all the car’s modules and components being made of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFP). Contrary to a conventional body structure with a large number of individual components, this monocoque is made of just a few shell elements connected to one another in a high-pressure furnace (a principle, incidentally, registered by Porsche for a patent).

The central unit comprises all structural functions, such as the transmission of reaction forces from the suspension and drivetrain normally handled by the bodyshell of the car. The drive unit, in turn, is bolted on to the chassis by means of the engine support fitted firmly in position, these two principal structural components acting together to provide one complete unit with a very high standard of torsional and flexural stiffness one might call the backbone of the Carrera GT. These modules serve to support the front and rear suspension and at the same time absorb any forces fed in by the crash structures, holding the body panels and the interior in position.

Carbon Structure Enhancing the Car’s Safety
Apart from its outstanding driving characteristics, the Carrera GT is also a very safe car: This ultra-high-performance sports car offers all of Porsche’s well-known active safety features even at the highest speeds, complying with all crash regulations applied worldwide.

In its torsional stiffness, the Carrera GT sets a new record for open cars, the passive safety offered being based on the monocoque passenger cell made of composite carbon fibre and supplemented by integral rollbars on the A- and B-pillars. For even greater strength and safety, the A-pillars are further reinforced by high-strength steel tubes.

Four airbags make yet another contribution to the car’s high standard of passive safety, with a full-size frontal airbag and a side airbag for both the driver and passenger. The side impact system, in turn, is made up in each case of a side airbag and a door panel including reinforcements made of high-strength steel tubes serving to take up impact energy.

Functional Elegance on all Equipment Features
The cockpit of the Carrera GT offers all the functional ambience of a genuine racing car, low weight being the name of the game also in this area – a target achieved in full through the exclusive use of high-tech materials throughout the interior. All the composite fibre components in the car’s chassis reflect the exclusive nature and quality of carbon as a very special material.

The centre console sweeping upwards is also made of carbon firmly connected to the chassis of the car in the interest of extra safety. On top of the centre console is an extra-light, galvanised magnesium element housing all buttons and switches. The gearshift lever with its ball-shaped knob made of laminated birchwood, in turn, bears testimony to the culture of motor racing in the old days.

Positioned far up on the centre console, the shift lever is close to the steering wheel in the interest of superior sporting ergonomics. The Carrera GT is the first production car in the world with seat buckets made of composite carbon-fibre combined with non-splintering aramide fibre well-known in everyday language as kevlar. Complete with their supple leather upholstery, the seat buckets weigh a mere 22.7 lb each, approximately half the weight of a “normal" Porsche production seat.

new ferrari 599xx

The 79th Geneva International Motor Show provides the venue for Ferrari to announce the world debut of the 599XX which is aimed at a select group of clients. The latter new car incorporates the most advanced technologies resulting from Ferrari’s road-going and F1 research. Many of the technological solutions it carries are being used for the first time and have been developed exclusively for this special car.

The 599XX is aimed at owners that want to experience Prancing Horse driving pleasure at its purest - in fact, Ferrari will be organising a programme of dedicated track events for it in 2010/2011. Conceived exclusively for track but not official competition use, and thus unrestricted either by homologation limitations or regulatory restrictions, this extreme sports car incorporates the very best of Ferrari technology, the fruit both of our Research and Development Department’s labours and our long experience and experimentation in F1. The plethora of aerodynamic, electronic control and handling innovations used together for the first time on a single car make this model a genuine technological laboratory. The solutions adopted for the 599XX – many of which will remain exclusive to it - enhance its levels of performance and can be summed up in one highly relevant statistic: a Fiorano lap time of just 1 minute and 17 seconds. Although it is such an extreme car, the 599XX still retains the ergonomics of the road-going model which are essential for non-professional drivers engaging in intensive track driving.

While based on the 599 GTB Fiorano with the same transaxle layout and engine type, this prototype is an extreme track car. Ferrari’s engineers have carried out extensive work on the engine’s combustion chambers and inlet and exhaust tracts. These modifications, combined with the fact that internal attrition has been reduced and the maximum revs have been boosted to 9,000 rpm, helped achieve the target power output of 700 hp at 9,000 rpm. Particular attention was also paid to cutting the weight of the engine unit components. This was achieved both by optimising forms – as in the new crankshaft – and adopting exclusive materials, as in the carbon-fibre used for the intake plenums. A new gearbox shift strategy cuts overall gearchange times to 60 ms.

The 599XX is characterised by an innovative electronic concept called the “High Performance Dynamic Concept” which has been designed to get the maximum performance from the car by managing the combination of the car’s mechanical limits with the potential of its electronic controls. The mechanical and electronic systems work together to get the maximum performance from the car under extreme high performance driving, for consistent lap times. The sporty handling has been improved thanks to the adoption of second generation SCM suspension system. Track usage is also made easier thanks to the new “virtual car engineer”, a screen in the car that provides a real-time indication of the vehicle’s efficiency.

The 599XX’s aerodynamics were honed in numerous wind tunnel test sessions with the result that the car now boasts 280 kg of downforce at 200 km/h (630 kg at 300 km/h). The front underside of the body is completely faired-in and the vents that channel hot air from the engine bay have been moved to the bonnet.

The “Actiflow™” system increases downforce and/or cuts drag depending on the car’s trim cornering conditions, courtesy of the use of a porous material in the diffuser and two fans in the boot which channel the air flow from under the car out through two grilles next to the tail-lights. Winglets have been added to the rear buttresses to increase downforce. while synthetic jets have also been incorporated into the rear of the car to control and smooth the air flow and to reduce drag.

Ferrari’s engineers have also used F1-derived “doughnuts” which partly cover the brake discs and wheel rim. These have the dual function of improving both aerodynamics and brake cooling.

In terms of the bodywork, composites and carbon-fibre have been widely used and the engineers drew on their experience in working with aluminium to reach the weight target. The development of increasingly high-performance materials has also benefited the carbon-ceramic material braking system. The brake pads are now made from carbon-fibre which means that the callipers are smaller whilst guaranteeing the same efficiency. The new racing carbon ceramic braking system also delivers shorter braking distances and is generally more efficient due to the weight saving.

The 599XX comes with slick tyres (29/67 R19 Front and 31/71 R19 Rear) specifically developed to maximise stability in cornering and increase lateral acceleration. They are fitted to 19 x 11J wheel rims at the front and 19 x 12J at the rear.

new lamborghini preventon

The new Lamborghini Reventon, introduced by Lambo boss, Stephan Winkelmann. Reventon was unveiled today at Frankfurt Auto Show. The new Lambo based on the LP640. The Lamborghini Reventon will costs $1.4 million. Read press-release after jump…

Press Release: The most extreme

The essence of the marque: just 20 examples of a design masterpiece

Clearly a Lamborghini, but nothing quite like it. A super car without equals: the Lamborghini Reventon is a road vehicle with an extreme specification and, at the same time, a limited edition masterpiece - a coherent style, angular with sharp lines, inspired by the very latest aeronautics.

With just 20 produced, each 1 Million Euro (without taxes) Lamborghini Reventon is a symbol of extreme exclusivity, yet still offering the extraordinary performance that makes the Reventon so unrivalled: under the completely autonomous design, the Reventon possesses the entire technical and dynamic competence of the twelve cylinder Lamborghini.

Lamborghini prides itself on being the extraordinary manufacturer of extreme super sports cars without compromise. Sensuality and provocation characterise every Lamborghini, with an aggressively innovative style. “However, the Reventon is the most extreme of all, a true automotive superlative. Our designers at the Lamborghini Style Centre took the technical base of the Murcilago LP640 and compressed and intensified its DNA, its genetic code,” affirms Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A.

Born in Sant’Agata Bolognese

The Lamborghini Reventon has been entirely designed in Sant’Agata Bolognese, the original birthplace of the Lamborghini and the native home of every super car born under the sign of the bull. The design drawn up in Lamborghini’s Centro Stile (Style Centre) is fine-tuned in close collaboration with the Lamborghini Research and Development Department. Thus, the Reventon is not only “haute couture” but it also stands out for its elevated dynamism whilst being entirely suitable for every day use.

The Lamborghini Reventon is not destined to remain a one-off. A total of 20 Lamborghini friends and collectors will be able to own this extraordinary car and, naturally, enjoy the incomparable pleasure of driving it.

The name Reventon has been chosen according to Lamborghini tradition. Reventon was a fighting bull, owned by the Don Rodriguez family. It is included in the list of the most famous bulls ever and is known for killing the famed bullfighter Felix Guzman in 1943.

Inspired by the fastest airplanes

The present day Lamborghini models are distinguished by the clear language of their shape. The coherent proportions of the Murci??lago and Gallardo highlight their power and dynamism. Sharp edges, precise lines and clean surfaces: these are ingredients of a style reduced to the essential. Each element is created exactly according to its function; ornaments and decorations are totally foreign to a Lamborghini.

With the Reventon the Centro Stile designers have coherently developed this philosophy, inspired by another sphere where speed and dynamism reign absolute: modern aeronautics, responsible for the fastest and most agile airplanes in the world. This has created an extremely precise, technically striking style with a new vitality: interrupted lines and contorted surfaces create a fascinating play of light, giving the car incredible movement.

Made of carbon fibre and precision

Although it is based on the extraordinarily successful Murcilago LP640, the exterior design of the Reventon is completely new. Just like the base model, the exterior is made of CFC, a composite carbon fibre material, which is as stable as it is light. The exterior components are glued and fixed to the body comprised of CFC and steel.

The front is characterised by the acute angle of the central ‘arrow’ and by the powerful forward-facing air intakes. Although they do not supply air directly to the turbine like an airplane, bearing in mind the 650 hp, an abundant volume of air is necessary to cool the carbon brake disks and the six cylinder callipers.

Characterised by coherent functions

Naturally, both doors on the Reventon open upwards - since the legendary Countach this has also been a symbol of the V12 Lamborghini product line. With their asymmetric configuration, the large air intakes below the doors provide an example of the extreme coherence with which a Lamborghini fulfils its function: on the driver’s side it is large to increase the flow of oil to the radiator. On the passenger’s side of the vehicle, the air intake is flat because in this case, it only has to ensure the flow below the floor. The aerodynamically optimised flat floor structure terminates at the rear with a diffuser featuring an accentuated shape. This guarantees excellent road grip and stability even at 340 km per hour.

In spite of the extreme and innovative language of its shape, the Reventon not only maintains all the strong features of the Murcilago LP640, but also offers further amelioration in terms of aerodynamics, the important engine cooling system, the air intake system and brakes. The airflow and the section of the variable geometry air intakes of the engine and the rear spoiler (also adjustable) have been modified.
Owners of the 20 examples will be able to test the performance of his or her Lamborghini in person.

Perfected to the ultimate detail

The engine hood made of glass laminate with open ventilation slits offers a glimpse of the beating heart of the twelve cylinders of the super car. The glass also features the marked arrow angle that characterises the design from the front to the rear spoiler. The Lamborghini designers’ love for detail is beautifully illustrated by the fuel tank lid: a small mechanical work of art, achieved by milling a solid aluminium block.

The combination lights transform the incisiveness of the design into light: the front features the most modern light-emitting diodes alongside Bi-Xenon headlights. Seven LEDs ensure continuous daylight while there are a further nine diodes for the indicator and hazard lights. Another technical innovation is found in the rear light LEDs. Because of the high temperature in the rear low part of the car, special heatproof LEDs are used for the indicator and hazard lights, stoplights and rear lights with a triple arrow optical effect.

A new body colour

Naturally, such a refined language of shape also demands an extraordinary colour. For the 20 examples of the Revent??n, the designers from Sant’Agata Bolognese have created a totally new hue: Revent??n, a mid opaque green/grey without the usual shine. However, thanks to the metallic particles, in the daylight this colour tone features surprising depth.

Opaque and brilliant colours for the wheel rims
This play of opaque and lustre is also featured on the wheel rims, especially created for the Revent??n. Opaque carbon fins are screwed onto the black aluminium spokes, not only creating a visual effect with the precision of a surgeon’s scalpel, but a turbine effect also ensures optimum cooling for the powerful ceramic brake disks.

TFT display similar to an airplane

The same innovative force applied to the exterior design characterises the cockpit of the Reventon. Designed and created using Alcantara, carbon, aluminium and leather that comply with the top quality standards, the interior is inspired by the next generation cockpits: just like in modern airplanes, the instruments comprise three TFT liquid crystal displays with innovative display modes. At the touch of a button, the driver can choose from two vehicle information display modes. The instruments are housed in a structure milled from a solid aluminium block, protected by a carbon fibre casing.

The G-Force-Meter is also completely new: this display shows the dynamic drive forces, longitudinal acceleration during acceleration and braking, as well as transversal acceleration around bends. These forces are represented by the movement of an indicator on a graduated 3D grid depending on the direction and intensity of the acceleration. A similar instrument can be found in the airplanes. Formula One teams also use a similar device to analyse dynamic forces.

Customisable instruments

The instrument on the left of the speedometer associates the number of revolutions in the form of a luminous column with the display of the selected gear. Finally, every Reventon is equipped with a robotised e.gear controlled by two small levers under the steering wheel.

By simply pressing a button, the driver can switch to the second, quasi-analogical display, where the classic circular instruments, speedometer and engine speed indicator are configured in an equally innovative way and transformed into luminous pilot lamps with varying colours. The G-Force-Meter naturally remains at the centre in this display mode.

Electronic system developed entirely by Lamborghini

All this is possible thanks to the fact that the entire electronic platform of the Reventon, together with all the control devices, has been autonomously developed by the Lamborghini experts.

The same process for integrating the electronic displays in the car was applied to the Lamborghini Engineering Department.

From the conception of the very first radical ideas, the entire Reventon has been developed in Sant’Agata Bolognese thanks to tight teams of remarkably creative experts. An extremely refined and efficient process was employed: CAD design and development, creation of the prototype in the Prototype Department, all carried out under the constant supervision of the Research and Development Department’s technicians and testers.

Atelier of creativity and high efficiency

Inaugurated in 2004, the Centro Stile is dedicated to design and characterised by a high degree of efficiency: an “atelier” of creators, designers and prototype constructors, who encapsulate the Lamborghini culture and spirit by using their remarkable skills to create aesthetic innovation.

The Centro Stile is located in a 2,900 square two-storey building. The large pavilion houses two test floors and related production and analysis equipment, while other rooms are set aside for the most advanced computerised workstations for designers and a style-model construction workshop. The Centro Stile is also closely linked to the nearby Engineering Department: the direct line between the Lamborghini development departments guarantees that ideas rapidly become reality.

Creativity and production under the same roof

The Lamborghini Revent??n is a practical illustration of the streamlined functionality and efficiency characterising the Centro Stile: it took less than a year to progress from the first ideas to the finished car. The complete design process from the first sketches on paper, to three dimensional computer models with 1:10 or 1:4 scale, right up to the real size prototype is organised around streamlined, fast, efficient work groups. Thanks to the Centro Stile, for the first time in its history, Lamborghini is now able to create its own style philosophy in-house without having to rely on any external collaboration.

The 20 units will be manufactured in Sant’Agata, using a production process characterised by artisan perfection and rigorous quality standards.

A masterpiece with tested technology

The technology found in the Murcilago LP640 has not been modified. The engine in the LP640 forwards is the classic twelve-cylinder engine with 6.5 litre displacement. Only for this car, Lamborghini guarantees, an astounding 650 HP (478 kW) at 8,000 revolutions per minute (rpm). The huge torque, equal to maximum 660 Nm, ensures a powerful switch from any number of revolutions: even the slightest pressure on the accelerator is spontaneously transformed into thrust. The robotised e.gear changes gear faster than even the most expert driver. In addition, the permanent Viscous Traction four-wheel drive system ensures that every force is constantly translated into movement.

As in the original Murcilago LP640, the Reventon accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds, with a maximum speed over 340 km/h.

Born to become a legend

Since its foundation, Lamborghini has been a creator of trends in the world of sports cars and has always manufactured cars with an absolutely unmistakable character. Models such as the Miura or Countach, for example, were veritable forerunners and rapidly acquired the status of timeless classic cars. From the moment they are launched, every new Lamborghini promises to become a legend, destined to become a sought-after and precious possession.

With the Lamborghini Reventon, Lamborghini has done it again; it has created an unequalled super car; the perfect synthesis between the exclusivity and appeal of a limited edition design masterpiece, and the dynamism and driveability of a standard sports car. Thus, the Lamborghini legend is further enhanced by another, stylish future classic.

new tiburon coupe

Having spent a week in the Hyundai Tiburon recently, I came to one conclusion, although it is a brilliant looking car, it can do with more power and a rear-wheel-drive setup. Thankfully the engineers at Hyundai agree! Say hello to the new Hyundai Rear-Wheel-Drive Tubrocharged Coupe
Details are sketchy so far but reports from Korea indicate two engine choices, a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with around 160kWs and a 3.8-litre V6 with around 206kWs.

Fortunately the new Tiburon will be, for the first time, rear-wheel-drive! Not only will the Tiburon become the new 200SX, but it most likely skyrocket Hyundai into the serious performance car league!
Reports also suggest the RWD Coupe will be larger than the current Tiburon, estimated to be roughly equivalent to the new Nissan Skyline (G35 Coupe). It will feature a start button, 19″ wheels plus the option for brembo brakes. As you can see from the picture below, the rotors appear gigantic!
Release date is expected around early to mid next year with a the possibility for an Australian arrival within 12 months from then.

tokyo ( robot pembantu )

TOKYO - Mimpi memiliki pembantu robot nampaknya segera terealisasi.

DARPA - MEMS robot bugs

Vanessa Alarcon saw them while working at an antiwar rally in Lafayette Square last month.

"I heard someone say, 'Oh my god, look at those,' " the college senior from New York recalled. "I look up and I'm like, 'What the hell is that?' They looked kind of like dragonflies or little helicopters. But I mean, those are not insects."

Out in the crowd, Bernard Crane saw them, too.

"I'd never seen anything like it in my life," the Washington lawyer said. "They were large for dragonflies. I thought, 'Is that mechanical, or is that alive?' "

That is just one of the questions hovering over a handful of similar sightings at political events in Washington and New York. Some suspect the insectlike drones are high-tech surveillance tools, perhaps deployed by the Department of Homeland Security.

Others think they are, well, dragonflies -- an ancient order of insects that even biologists concede look about as robotic as a living creature can look.

No agency admits to having deployed insect-size spy drones. But a number of U.S. government and private entities acknowledge they are trying. Some federally funded teams are even growing live insects with computer chips in them, with the goal of mounting spyware on their bodies and controlling their flight muscles remotely.

The robobugs could follow suspects, guide missiles to targets or navigate the crannies of collapsed buildings to find survivors.

The technical challenges of creating robotic insects are daunting, and most experts doubt that fully working models exist yet.

"If you find something, let me know," said Gary Anderson of the Defense Department's Rapid Reaction Technology Office.

But the CIA secretly developed a simple dragonfly snooper as long ago as the 1970s. And given recent advances, even skeptics say there is always a chance that some agency has quietly managed to make something operational.

"America can be pretty sneaky," said Tom Ehrhard, a retired Air Force colonel and expert in unmanned aerial vehicles who is now at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, a nonprofit Washington-based research institute.

Robotic fliers have been used by the military since World War II, but in the past decade their numbers and level of sophistication have increased enormously. Defense Department documents describe nearly 100 different models in use today, some as tiny as birds, and some the size of small planes.

All told, the nation's fleet of flying robots logged more than 160,000 flight hours last year -- a more than fourfold increase since 2003. A recent report by the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College warned that if traffic rules are not clarified soon, the glut of unmanned vehicles "could render military airspace chaotic and potentially dangerous."

But getting from bird size to bug size is not a simple matter of making everything smaller.

"You can't make a conventional robot of metal and ball bearings and just shrink the design down," said Ronald Fearing, a roboticist at the University of California at Berkeley. For one thing, the rules of aerodynamics change at very tiny scales and require wings that flap in precise ways -- a huge engineering challenge.

Only recently have scientists come to understand how insects fly -- a biomechanical feat that, despite the evidence before scientists' eyes, was for decades deemed "theoretically impossible." Just last month, researchers at Cornell University published a physics paper clarifying how dragonflies adjust the relative motions of their front and rear wings to save energy while hovering.

That kind of finding is important to roboticists because flapping fliers tend to be energy hogs, and batteries are heavy.

The CIA was among the earliest to tackle the problem. The "insectothopter," developed by the agency's Office of Research and Development 30 years ago, looked just like a dragonfly and contained a tiny gasoline engine to make the four wings flap. It flew but was ultimately declared a failure because it could not handle crosswinds.

Agency spokesman George Little said he could not talk about what the CIA may have done since then. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service also declined to discuss the topic.

Only the FBI offered a declarative denial. "We don't have anything like that," a spokesman said.

The Defense Department is trying, though.

In one approach, researchers funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) are inserting computer chips into moth pupae -- the intermediate stage between a caterpillar and a flying adult -- and hatching them into healthy "cyborg moths."

The Hybrid Insect Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems project aims to create literal shutterbugs -- camera-toting insects whose nerves have grown into their internal silicon chip so that wranglers can control their activities. DARPA researchers are also raising cyborg beetles with power for various instruments to be generated by their muscles.

"You might recall that Gandalf the friendly wizard in the recent classic 'Lord of the Rings' used a moth to call in air support," DARPA program manager Amit Lal said at a symposium in August. Today, he said, "this science fiction vision is within the realm of reality."

A DARPA spokeswoman denied a reporter's request to interview Lal or others on the project.

The cyborg insect project has its share of doubters.

"I'll be seriously dead before that program deploys," said vice admiral Joe Dyer, former commander of the Naval Air Systems Command, now at iRobot in Burlington, Mass., which makes household and military robots.

By contrast, fully mechanical micro-fliers are advancing quickly.

Researchers at the California Institute of Technology have made a "microbat ornithopter" that flies freely and fits in the palm of one's hand. A Vanderbilt University team has made a similar device.

With their sail-like wings, neither of those would be mistaken for insects. In July, however, a Harvard University team got a truly fly-like robot airborne, its synthetic wings buzzing at 120 beats per second.

"It showed that we can manufacture the articulated, high-speed structures that you need to re-create the complex wing motions that insects produce," said team leader Robert Wood.

The fly's vanishingly thin materials were machined with lasers, then folded into three-dimensional form "like a micro-origami," he said. Alternating electric fields make the wings flap. The whole thing weighs just 65 milligrams, or a little more than the plastic head of a push pin.

Still, it can fly only while attached to a threadlike tether that supplies power, evidence that significant hurdles remain.

In August, at the International Symposium on Flying Insects and Robots, held in Switzerland, Japanese researchers introduced radio-controlled fliers with four-inch wingspans that resemble hawk moths. Those who watch them fly, its creator wrote in the program, "feel something of 'living souls.' "

Others, taking a tip from the CIA, are making fliers that run on chemical fuels instead of batteries. The "entomopter," in early stages of development at the Georgia Institute of Technology and resembling a toy plane more than a bug, converts liquid fuel into a hot gas, which powers four flapping wings and ancillary equipment.

"You can get more energy out of a drop of gasoline than out of a battery the size of a drop of gasoline," said team leader Robert Michelson.

Even if the technical hurdles are overcome, insect-size fliers will always be risky investments.

"They can get eaten by a bird, they can get caught in a spider web," said Fearing of Berkeley. "No matter how smart you are -- you can put a Pentium in there -- if a bird comes at you at 30 miles per hour there's nothing you can do about it."

Protesters might even nab one with a net -- one of many reasons why Ehrhard, the former Air Force colonel, and other experts said they doubted that the hovering bugs spotted in Washington were spies.

So what was seen by Crane, Alarcon and a handful of others at the D.C. march -- and as far back as 2004, during the Republican National Convention in New York, when one observant but perhaps paranoid peace-march participant described on the Web "a jet-black dragonfly hovering about 10 feet off the ground, precisely in the middle of 7th avenue . . . watching us"?

They probably saw dragonflies, said Jerry Louton, an entomologist at the National Museum of Natural History. Washington is home to some large, spectacularly adorned dragonflies that "can knock your socks off," he said.

At the same time, he added, some details do not make sense. Three people at the D.C. event independently described a row of spheres, the size of small berries, attached along the tails of the big dragonflies -- an accoutrement that Louton could not explain. And all reported seeing at least three maneuvering in unison.

"Dragonflies never fly in a pack," he said.

Mara Verheyden-Hilliard of the Partnership for Civil Justice said her group is investigating witness reports and has filed Freedom of Information Act requests with several federal agencies. If such devices are being used to spy on political activists, she said, "it would be a significant violation of people's civil rights."

For many roboticists still struggling to get off the ground, however, that concern -- and their technology's potential role -- seems superfluous.

"I don't want people to get paranoid, but what can I say?" Fearing said. "Cellphone cameras are already everywhere. It's not that much different."
